School Boy Series (Part 1) - MeePok The Left Handed Goldfish

I've known MeePok since Sec 1 and while we were in different class then, we were part of the chatek gang that gathers everyday in the foyer before school and during recess.

It wasn't until Sec 2 (and again in JC1 and JC2) that we ended up in the same class. While I was the "paper hat and can opener" gladiator, MeePok was easily in the top 50 and as such, he would be the mean-looking Uzi-slinging warrior with about a dozen grenades to his belt.

We used to call him Goldfish coz of his bulging lovely big eyes and this guy had a trademarked lopsided way of doing push-up. Being a south-paw like me, the strength of both his arms were so unbalanced that his left shoulder will always come up before the right during push-ups.

However, the most memorable incident was in Sec 4 where he ended up in the Principal's office that day.

It was the morning assembly and it was a particularly special day because SBC TV12 was there to do a documentary series on schools that were planning to go independent. MeePok was coincidentally the national flag bearer of the day.

So the filming started and we stood to attention as the national anthem began to blare. We sang our "Mari Kita" with gusto and pomp coz we were on TV!

Then something strange happened. At around halfway through the anthem the national flag stopped rising and stayed in that position all the way till the end of the anthem. Everybody was puzzled with a certain MeePok at the foot of the flagpole in panic stations.

There was a silent paused then as we watched the cameraman go up to the 2nd floor corridor to investigate the mystery of the national flag at half-mast. The cameraman lifted the flag and OH MY GAWD!

It was WHITE OVER RED!!

MeePok had single-handedly turned Singapore into Poland!

On national TV some more!!

HONG KAN!!!

The flag was stuck at half-mast coz the knot which was supposed to be below, got to the top before the flag did and got stuck at the pole-top pulley. The whole school ROARED, shaking the whole school with laughter. The principal's face went from zero to black in 0.8 seconds flat.

"Will the national flag bearer, please report to the Principal's office immediately after assembly."

MeePok kena ear bashing jialat jialat that day.

p.s. Blackmail question of the day: Who's Amy?

Jay - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Wa lau eh!! These are pics I've not seen in years !! The top one was taken when we were trying to sian the gals in our junior class during orientation.

My 2 cents worth:

1. I'm not top 50 lah. Umbrella man is. You should write about him. He is the epitome of cock. I rank second.

2. We looked great in blue and white. The uniform made us look slim too. The dark blue inner collar looks cool and conceals stains (gow-quake) brilliantly.

3. Principal (Mr. W. Thomas) wanted to expel me for an gross act of public disgrace. (Note: I'm sure he didn't see you, Wing and Cheng running naked round the school yard the day before). In my bargain plea, I revealed the names of the porn tape distributors in school. Yes, I snitched but I "brudder" with you. I deliberately left your name out ……

4. Re Polish flag, I've maintained this over the past 19 years: I didn't do it on purpose. Those who gave me a standing ovation after I returned from the principal's office that fateful day still do not believe me.

5. Who's Amy?

Jay, lull period ah? How come so many posts recently?

MeePok: Sigh... those were the good ol' days. I think we gave up on the junior girls after a while as we went downstairs to chor chor the Arts and Commerce girls.

Remember the ECA notice board in the canteen? The bunch of us pasted a recruitment notice for "Sun Tan Club" We have two lists. One for boys and one for girls to sign up.
Obviously, there was no such thing as a "Sun Tan Club". At the end of the day, we took down the noticed before anybody realised the wiser and just kept the girls' list, throwing away the rest.

It was a fruitful havest full of telephone numbers!

1) I don't personally know Umbrella Man so I can't write much about him. Besides, he gives me the creeps.

2) I don't know what it was about our navy blue and white uniform. School girls tend to flock to them, like us to pinafores.... dunno why.... hmm...

3) Brudder. It was not on the grounds of Public Disgrace. It was more towards Treason!

4) I believe you. We are still celebrating national day on 9 August and not 11 November, aren't we?

5) Wah.. the cute JC junior from SB? You heartless creature. So fast forget liao.... nao hiah...

I am sure he is drafting a blog about me, as we speak, in retaliation.
I think I sure kena jialat jialat from him one.

vandice: The name MeePok only came on recently as he realised the name "Goldfish" can't really score chicks.

Lull period? Au contraire mon amis. I was inspired by Belle's to cheong a 10-blog series.
Besides, if you check my archives, I write on average, one blog a day anyway.

Jay - Re(5), don't make me take out the ol' skeletons in your closet, esp those during your wild (cow grass chewing) days. I'm sure your blog kakis are more than eager to learn about Danny, Joe and Lorenzo ………… (didn't they join your private sun tan club?)

Jaschocolate: No lah. Not angry with him. Since Sec 1, I learnt not to abuse other hormonally charged, intellectually challenged boys (like myself). By the way, have you heard of the saying, "Brudder, Brudder; Whack you harder" (it rhymes!). Won't be writing about Jay. I don't bully the weak.

Vandice – Life is like a bowl of meepok tah, you'll never know what you're gonna get. Yah, like Jay said, "Goldfish" doesn't attract chicks. They want other bulging appendages, not eyes. Meepok is something Ah Lians and (sadly, Ah sohs) can easily identify with. Hope to score with the Ah Lians and pass the Ah Sohs to Jay. For more info on why I chose this pseudonym, go to my maiden posting http://meepoktah.blogdrive.com/archive/cm-04_cy-200 5_m-04_d-07_y-2005_o-0.html

Jaschocolate: Just to jump to MeePok's defence. "Brudder" here means he and I. Not his other "Brudder". Thank you for your attention.

Vandice: I take it as a blessing when MeePok shoves all the Ah Sohs to me. They could have be Ah Mahs!

Jas - The secret to a woman's heart is to make her laugh :-) Further more, Meepok is not a cheem name. Sure can pLonounce one. (Notice there are no "r", "sh" and "ch")

Jay - Truce, truce. Else we may never recover from collateral damage.

If MeePok can turn Singapore into Poland, how difficult can it be for him to sian zarbo with the MeePok moniker?

milktea: Glad you enjoyed it. More to come as this week unfolds.

Jay - one more thing to add. Because the state flag was stuck, the school flag was catching up fast. I knew I was screwed, with capital S. The guy raising the school flag gave me a glance when he gave it the fateful tug. The school flag overtook our red & white !! NB.
Needless to say, people (esp teachers at the assembly) were wondering who died in Singapore. Our state flag was at half mast that morning :-)

Warraoz, you two obviously go back a longz way. You crack me up. But really lah...

MPTMH: You were a scout issit? Last time in my sch. only scouts can do the flag raising cos must know all the proper knots to tie and also fold the flag (only unfurl at the very top)

Jay: That was during your soccer pundit days lah (one post a day). Aniwaz, really interesting series you got here. I must learn to write like you, bringing characters to life.

Haiz, my writing sux, comparatively. Rest assured I shall be loyal supporter of your series...

MeePok: Truce indeed! Machiam like US vs USSR during the Cold War arms race.
Re: Half Mast. Must have been some important Polish guy. It was after all, the Poland flag at half mast, is it not? :P

vandice: MeePok from NCC Land. Staff-Sergeant somewhat... mai siao siao hor! Obviously, different schools do thing differently. At our school, all the uniformed groups take turns to do the flag raising ceremonies. I too had my share of flag bearer as well as "parade commander". Among all the UYOs, the scouts unfortunately are the most lao kwee one.

We don't do the bundled-flag-at-the-top-unfurling-at-the-tug style on normal flag raising days. That one for special occasions.

Our style is flag draped over left shoulder and slowly raising it to the national anthem.

National flag must reach the top at the end of the first "Majullah Singapura" with the school flag reaching the top at the end of the second.

Anyway, real glad to know that you liked my nonsense. Your blog also buay pai mah.

MeePok and I believe in laughter-being-the-best-medicine approach in our writing as we believe the world needs a lot more of that.

It brings us joy to bring a smile to your face, through our writing.

Vandice - No lah. I'm not See-kow (dead dog). I NCC one (niang-niang-chiang). I had the rare honour to raise the state flag on that momentous day. Look what happened. After that, NCC not allowed to raise flags anymore. In fact, the principal wanted to shut ACS NCC down and give our room to bapok (lady-boy) guides. To the See-kow's dismay, MOE didn't not approve the plans as they couldn't process admission forms with both male and female boxes checked.

Crunchy Green apple - ACS boys, you'll either love them to death or hate them to bits. Jay and I belong to the prior category. Once you can overlook our apparent swagger of confidence (ie. yah-yah), we are good as gold. Oh yes, those belonging to the 1st category like to lie too :-)

Eileen - You are wrong. My vice principal "Iron Maiden" Wan was with Mr Thomas when I saw them. She wears her skirt all the way to her chest. I believe that was the genesis of sports / support bras. Needless to say, viewing them at close proximity caused me some brain damage. This explains why I'm so screwed up today.

Acherly hor, the skirt went only up to the chest because go something blocking lor. Or else, it would have gone higher.
