Nick sat in front of my in Sec 3 and 4 coz we both wanted to sit directly under the ceiling fan. Being a Filipino, he was very good looking and sings very well. In terms of academic ranking, I would classify him as a six-shot revolver. (Damn, is there anyone who did worse than my can opener, like a cheese grater or something? Sheesh!)
Nick was a talented writer and his poems were a regular feature in our class reading and one even made it to the school's yearbook. A prefect (read: I was a jee seow kia) and was well liked by all the teachers especially the younger lady teachers. I wondered if it's got anything to do with his looks. Hmm.... I wonder....
Nick and I clicked quite well together as we both loved music and would always hang out regularly at record stores after school (Anyone remembers Supreme Records, Valentine Music?)
Then there is this one time.
Nick: Eh Jay. Check out the new single that I bought.
Me: Jody Watley. Looking For A New Love. I like that song!
Nick: You can borrow it home today, if you want.
Me: Sweet! Thanks!
Nick: But you must do one thing for me.
Me: Sure. what do you need me to do.
Nick: Record the songs into tape (cassette).
Me: Not a problem. Will do it today and pass the tape to you tomorrow with the record.
Nick: Nah. Leave the record at your place for the time being. No hurry.
Me: Ok, when do you need it back then?
Nick: No hurry. Just leave it there first.
Me: Eh?
Nick: I don't have a turn-table at home.
Me: -------- -_-" -------- ~8
* I think I mentioned this before in my earlier Musical Baton blog.
Well, I lost contact with Nick after he finished his A-Levels at VJC. I heard that he returned to Phillippines as he didn't want to do NS in Singapore and hence given up the Singaporean citizenship. What I heard later was that he did his university back home and got married in the same year as he, a Catholic, got some girl pregnant.
If the story was true (can anyone verify this?), his daughter would have been hmm.... 16, 17 years old today? Wow!

Muahaha... I have a Filipino fren here who's really similar. He really knows how to 'use' ppl. Maybe tt's an offshoot of filipino culture, which is very friendly and communal. I'm sure he must have been the life of the party, if there ever was one...

If he like the song, he could have asked around or go buy Jody Watley in cassette tape form.
Man, this was the time before CD existed!

but i have to agree most filipinos are good singers and yes, there is a problem of overpopulation in the Philippines.

MeePok: Yes and dada... how can I forget that at Funan (Kimarie ring a bell?).
milktea: I don't think there is over population lah. Just poor urban planning resulting in people all kena squashed in one small plot of land leaving vast acres of forest untouched.
Good thing or bad? Depends on how you see it lor.

crunchie: The Filipinos I've met all very nice folks and boy, do they ALL love to sing (and very well if I may add).
Being from an all boys school, naturally easier to write about boys mah. I am actually considering writing about girls as well but I think I would leave it to August when I get back from Vegas.

jaschocolate: For a smart guy, it was certainly a gush of shit to the brain. Or some would call it a brain fart.
It's not like he do this often. That was his ONE and ONLY vinyl that he bought.
Perhaps, he REALLY like that song so much?
