Name Series Part 1 - Angela

Tracking Back
As promised, it's time to write my story about Angela. However, as I was writing about her, I was inspired to turn it into yet another series. Without further ado, Here's this week's Name Series.

Foreword
We meet new people every day and we often than not, form a initial impression of the person at the very first introduction. As people often have same names, we unwittingly tend to group them in the same category based on this very simple association. Based on our own past experiences, a certain name may tag along with it, a positive or negative connotation.

Angela I
Angela and Angela appeared in my life at different stages. Sec 3 and when I was working in Tuas.

For those who have not be following my blog for long, I was an active member in the St John Ambulance Brigade during my school days not only in my own school but in several other schools as instructors. Angela was from First Toa Payoh Secondary School and was a cadet where I was teaching. I guess owing to the fact that I was just a year older, it is very easy to get along with my cadets as we are of the same age. However, to keep things strictly professional between instructors and cadets, there was a no-fraternising policy in place. Alas, this line of separation is often blurred. Blame it on raging teenage hormones.
It was just a matter of days after my first appearance before my phone number gets leaked out and circulated. Before you know it, I was getting phone calls day in and day out. I've always enjoyed a good chat from time to time but limit it at that before incurring the wrath of the school principal and the adult officers-in-charge.

One night, the phone rang. I picked up the phone and there was a very low voice on the other end, whom I initially thought was a man and probably looking for my dad since the person sounded quite old from the low voice.

Jay: Hello?
Angela: *in her bladdy low voice* 猜猜我是谁?
Jay: *screaming silently* Wah lan eh!! Du tio kwee ah!!

I slammed the phone accidentally but partly also iTioChuah.

Minutes later, the phone rang again as it was Angela again whom she identified herself the second time round. She apologised for calling out of the blue and I apologised for the panic slamming of the phone. Anyway, the phone conversation lasted 5 minutes as I was studying and she never called again.

Angela II
Ahh yes, we've come to Angela of the mid-90s. The highlight of this entry. She was a colleague in Tuas where I work and the best way to describe her would probably be "Weird Weird 的". She was in the accounts department where I was running the marketing, sales and operations departments.

The bad news is that she has this MEGA crush on my Ops Manager.
The good news is that she has this MEGA crush on my Ops Manager.

Heng ah. Mm si wa. Bor wa eh tai chee.

Angela was this stocky girl about 1.7m with a hunch. Thick glasses with a slight underbite and no neck. The type where you point to the sky and she would have to bend backwards in order to look up. Ok Ok..... so I exaggerate a little but ask any ACS boy about Mrs Wan (Frankenstein Woman) and they will know what I am talking about.

Anyway, below was a conversation between my Ops Manager and her, that floored us.

Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Eh Angie, you last one to leave the office yesterday hor?
Angela: Yah.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Eh, you forgot to switch off the lights before you leave. How many times must I tell you to switch off the lights if you are the last one to leave.
Angela: *silence*
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: *sarcastic* You at night sleep with all the lights turned on one is it?
Angela: Yah.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: *speechless*

Because we knew that she was a bit "funny funny", we could tell, from that last response, if she was telling a matter of fact. To further illustrate her "weirdness", we had a visit from her parents in the office one day looking for her. Their daughter didn't return home the night before and apparently it was a frequent occurrence. We were told that she often just disappear for days and reappear out from nowhere.

She stayed with the company for close to 3 years before she tendered her resignation.

Rumour has it that her secret affair with our IT Manager soured. Nonetheless, she still maintained the Mega Crush on my Ops Manager.

So it was her last day of work and she went around bidding farewell to everyone in the office. She deliberately saved the last stop for my Ops Manager who occupies the cubicle next to mine.

Angela: Ah Phua.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Yah?
Angela: Today my last day leh. I just want to say goodbye.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Orh. Ok. Good luck hor.
Angela: Yah. Thanks. You take care hor.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Thanks. I will.
Angela: Ah Phua.
Mega Crush Ops Mgr: Yah?
Angela: 你会想我吗?

Next thing before anyone knows it, there was coffee spurted all over the PC, the monitor, the printer, the desk and the Ops Manager's shirt was all wet.

I had to sprint to the toilet before my head explodes from trying to contain my laughter.

So to all the future Angelas that I will meet. My apologies up front.

I nearly puked my ribena onto my precious computer screen sia. hahaha..
Anyway, the name Angela reminded me of my damn fierce guides senior who eventually became my maths teacher in jc. Talk about freaky coincidence. There are so many classes in a level and she was assigned to the one I'm in.
